Red hair dye washes out of hair very quickly, much faster than other shades do. However, taking a few simple steps to prepare your hair before you dye it can help make the red hair dye stick much better to the hair shafts. The main thing to do is to use a chelating shampoo to remove all traces of styling gels and creams from your hair. Chlorine particles also tend to stick to hair, so if your water is chlorinated you should also use the chelating shampoo to remove any traces of mineral from your hair. This is probably the most important preliminary step to take.
Then, after you have dyed your hair, there are some other simple things you can do that will help you maintain your red hair color. Washing your hair with a red color enhancing shampoo can make all the difference to how long you will keep your vibrant shock of red hair.
Another step to take is to remember to cover up when you go outside in the sunlight. Sunlight shining down on red hair tends to make the color fade very fast, as does swimming. So, summer especially can be a very difficult time to maintain your red hair color. If you are going to swim in a pool that is chlorinated, wear a swimming cap.
One last tip, do not wash your hair too often, as washing really does strip the color from your hair. The less often you wash your hair the better your chances of keeping your red hair color vibrant, and shining.
