Chances are, if you are the parent of a young child, that you have to wash your child’s cot bed duvet cover frequently, necessitating that you have several sets of duvet covers on hand. While duvet covers are not terribly expensive, it can be costly buying several matching sets. Making your own will both save you money and will allow you to come up with your own unique cover.
First of all you will need to choose your material. Look for something that will fit the overall décor of your child’s room. You may also want to choose material with a pattern that will not show any tiny speck of dirt as easily. Some great ideas for a children’s room is to buy two cheap twin bed sheet sets, in contrasting yet complementing colors. For example, blue and orange or red and brown or whatever two colors would match with the room. You can use the flat sheets to sew the duvet covers and then you will still have two fitted sheets that can be used alternately on the cot bed that will match the cot bed duvet cover perfectly.
You will need additional supplies, depending on the pattern you choose to follow. There are many simple patterns with instructions for duvet covers online, all of which could be easily adapted to making a cot bed duvet cover. The only difference is the size of the cover itself; with the material needing to be cut to the size of the duvet that your child uses. Typically, aside from the material, you will need a tape measure or a long ruler, sewing scissors, straight pins, sew on snaps and a sewing machine.
If you prefer, you can use a single colored, soft material for the bottom section of the cot bed duvet cover, especially if your child will be sleeping directly under it. If you are capable of using a sewing machine to sew a straight line and you can follow a simple pattern, you should be able to make the cover in a few hours.
