Why Shopping for Boys Clothing with Your Child is Hard
Wednesday, September 8th, 2010
When it comes to shopping for boys clothing, many mothers often dread going to the retail shops with their young sons. The reason: their sons are like miniature versions of their fathers when it comes to shopping. Boys sit outside, find a bench, play hide and seek while mothers are out shopping for their clothes. They don’t think it’s in their best interest to just look around the store for a shirt they might like to wear. Granted, that they may squeal at the familiar face of Spongebob on a shirt and pick that as their primary outfit, but once they’ve finished choosing, they flop down on a corner and start glaring at you till you’re forced to choose an outfit for him.
Nobody can blame men for getting bored while going out shopping for clothing, the same goes for boys when shopping for boys clothing. The blame lies on gender specific genes that are embedded in all of us. In the past, men have been known to be the hunters of the family. They hunt their food, catch it and kill it. Women in contrast, survive by gathering for the family, they learn how to choose, take their time and pick only the best items to make a comfortable home. Men no longer need to hunt in order to gather food, but they do need to hunt for their new pair of shoes. The reason why men are quick to act is because they are biologically wired to zero in on what they want, pick it up, purchase it, and go home. Women on the hand, enjoy looking around taking their time exploring their options before buying. Anything that catches their attention will end up in their cart and after careful inspection and thought, only the best comes home.
The next time you shop for boys clothing with your little man, try considering his side of the evolutionary spectrum. Resist the urge to pick things he doesn’t need and maybe consider that the Spongebob shirt he picked might actually look good on him.
