Bar stool cushions, for some backside comfort

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

Bar stools are a convenient and welcome addition to many kitchen designs.  They are by nature, however, somewhat uncomfortable to sit on for any longer than a quick bite to eat.  The smallish seat size and the inadequate back support (if it has any at all), beg for a solution.

Bar stool cushions are the obvious answer here, and they are a popular upgrade for many owners.  Not only do they add some much appreciated comfort, they also provide an added measure of style for the room they’re in.

Acquiring a set of stool cushions may seem as simple as pointing and clicking at an affordable set online.  There are, however a few points worth considering before making that final checkout purchase.

A cheap set of cushions are simple round, rug like, mats that offer little in the way of padded comfort.  One step above these are foam padded round cushions that you simply place atop your stools.  The problem with both of these simple styles is that they offer no anchoring system.  Typical bar stools have no back supports with which to tie straps to, to anchor the cushion, and keep it off the floor.  One notable solution for basic round bar stools is the use of a stretch skirt.  This is sewn into the circumference of the cushion and it is pulled down over the lip of the seat top for a secure fit.

A second solution, which works well with square top bar stools as well, is a tie strap design.  These ties are fed down below the seat top where they are tied, velcroed or snapped together.  These designs can be readily found online in varying sizes.  It is however, important that the sizes match your stools quite closely for a proper fit.

It may be a more practical solution, for many, to go the custom made route to ensure a proper cushion fit.  Going custom also affords the opportunity to use the fabric of your choice.  Perhaps you have some left over fabric from some drapes, a slip cover or a cotton blanket which you’d to use.  Typically a good poly-cotton upholstery fabric would be best, however.

Finally, going the custom route offers the opportunity to choose the type of padding.  A cheap polyester fill will be better than no padding at all, but it’s a sorry excuse for a stool cushion.  Using several inches of standard foam padding is the obvious ideal solution, but I would go one step further and use memory foam.  Choosing a high quality memory foam is the perfect solution for a cushion that will last.  Standard foam will flatten with use over time.  Memory foam will retain its original shape much longer, and keep those bar stool cushions providing comfort for many years.  Good luck!

3 Ways to Add Color and Interest to Your Boring Cooking Space

Friday, October 29th, 2010

There are a lot of things going on in the kitchen. Meals are prepared, wine is sipped during conversations with longtime time friends, and homework is finished at the kitchen table. With so much going on in your cooking space, shouldn’t it be groomed decoratively? Here are three great ways to spiffy up your boring kitchen.

Many times homeowners forget that what they sit on in the kitchen can be decorated or at least bring in some color. A bar stool cushion set or chair cushions, can not only make you and your guests more comfortable, but it can also invite colorful patterns and textures into the space. This creates instant interest!

Another great way to add interest and color to your kitchen is by changing up your window treatments to allow more natural light in from outdoors. The more light you have in a kitchen the more homey and comfortable it will feel. No one likes a stuffy kitchen, so take down those boring drapes and instead use café curtains or roman shades. These are both stylish and inexpensive window options for adding color to your kitchen.

If you still need more pizzazz in your kitchen, try adding colorful blooming flowers to your kitchen. You can use a standing plant stand in one of the corners of the kitchen to display purple, yellow, and blue blossoms. If you have the ceiling space, hanging baskets by a window look nice as well. Is your window sill looking a bit drab? Add an indoor window box with dainty flowers. Flowers are living art. They change constantly and add interest and color to your kitchen area.

Many homeowners spend quite a bit of time in their kitchen, so changing up the space from time to time does a lot to add interest. Kitchen cushion sets add color, as does changing your curtains, and adding a few flower boxes to the space. Every little bit helps add beauty to your kitchen. Now read about a mirror coffee table.
