Athlete’s Foot: What You Need To Know

The vast majority of athlete’s foot infections are caused by a dermatophyte (keratin loving) fungus.  In rare cases the candida albicans yeast is involved.  The infection is also known as tenia pedis or ringworm of the foot and is one of the most common types of fungal infection that dermatologists will encounter. It is highly contagious, but typically easy to treat using over-the-counter medications.

The infection normally takes hold between the toes, where the skin can remain moist for long periods of time. Here the infection results in an itching, stinging or burning sensation. If left to progress without treatment, blisters will form and the skin may crack and peel. You may see raw tissue exposed as well as excessive dryness on the sides of the feet. The same fungus that causes athlete’s foot also can spread to affect the toenails in a fungal infection called Onychomycosis. But nail fungus infections can also develop independently of athlete’s foot.

You are more at risk from infection if you wear tight shoes that squeeze the toes together and create the kind of moist, warm and airless conditions in which fungal organisms can thrive. Wearing moist socks for long periods of time can also encourage fungal growth. It’s a good idea to avoid wearing synthetic  socks and plastic shoes as these do not allow your feet to breathe or dry out. Athlete’s foot is easily spread in moist environments such as public showers or swimming pools. Coming into contact with infected towels can also result in an infection.  But remember that these fungal organisms often exist harmlessly on the skin without causing negative symptoms. If you keep your skin clean and dry they don’t tend to overgrow into an outbreak.

Although generally not needed because the visible characteristic of athlete’s foot are relatively distinctive, it is possible to diagnose the foot disorder by performing a potassium hydroxide (KOH) test. Your doctor can also order a laboratory culture if there is any uncertainty as to what is causing your condition.  Most sufferers of mild infections self treat by purchasing an over-the-counter antifungal medication such as Lamisil AT, Mycocide antifungal or Tineacide antifungal cream.  When treating with a topical antifungals remember to apply the medication for at least four weeks after the symptoms have disappeared. This is to ensure that you are completely eliminating the fungus and reducing the risk of re-current infection.  If the infection is a severe one, that is unresponsive to topical treatments, oral systemic medications may be needed.
