The Guide to a Samsung Tablet

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

Who cares about the iPad now that Samsung have released a very desirable Android based tablet? The iPad certainly started the tablet revolution but as Android Tablets just keep getting better and better it can’t hope to compete. Not to say they are all perfect, many Android devices leave a lot to be desired, and even the Galaxy Tab is a little fuzzy here and there, but overall it is a strong contender and only promises that Apple face very stiff competition.

It is the main specification which makes the Samsung Galaxy Tab such a desirable device and something of an Apple iPad killer are its 7 inch touch screen and a very handheld friendly form factor that makes it a more appropriate device to carry around than the oddly shaped iPad.

The screen on the Samsung tablet is 4.72 inches wide, and has a very decent 1024×600 resolution. It’s smaller size doesn’t just make it easy to hold, but also ensures there are many pockets it will fit in like inside jacket pockets, and easier to slip inside purses and bags. This makes it more convenient than the ipad, which practically begs a carry case of its own.

In the usability stakes there are many things to consider. The android OS operating system is fast and responsive as is the touch screen, but there are issues when it comes to Adobe Flash which may cause it to become less fluid as it chews up resources. This is perhaps a little vindication of Apple’s abhorrence of Adobe Flash.

For those who like to store lots of files, there’s 16GB of memory and it is also expandable via micro SDHC up as high as 32GB. That should be enough to store all the apps you’re able to get a hold of on the Android market place. The expandability is of course a large draw, especially given the large range of apps.

There are few things that can be found to fault it, except perhaps that it so closely matches Apple’s device in terms of price. Many had hoped that even the most expensive Android tablet would be considerably cheaper than Apple’s hardware, but it seems manufacturers don’t agree. But these faults aside there’s many good reasons to pick one up.

It’s form factor means it’s more likely to be toted out into the wild and will therefore allow users to get all the value of their investment out of the device. For that reason it may will be said to be even better than the product it’s primarily competing against.

How Can You Find The Best Business Laptop

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

If you use the Internet at all in your business, you of course want the best business laptop. In addition to the most reliable brand of computer, you also need to take into account such things as the size and resloution of screen, the size of hard drive and the amount of RAM. A mixture of function and design is an ideal solution, although you may need to compromise somewhere. Many people like a laptop that is light and compact; whlie a larger screen may be more useful if you routinely use it to give presentations. However, a larger screen does make the machine heavier and less portable – a big drawback if you also want to use your laptop on the go. This should all be taken into account when choosing a machine, as well as the other important factor, the amount of RAM. More RAM and hard drive space available will generally give you a smoother and more trouble free operating experience.

The importance of a large amount of RAM cannot be underestimated and if you do want to buy the best business laptop for your needs, this will be essential. A lot of RAM allows your computer to work more efficiently and lets you run several different programs with less risk of the machine crashing or freezing. Buying a new computer can be a surprisingly difficult decision and one strategy that takes some of the guesswork out of the process is that of choosing the option of rent to own. This has two advantages – it allows you to use the laptop regularly to make sure that you like it and that it works for you and your business. It also means that your payments on the machine will almost certainly be lower. So if you just do not know which computer to buy, consider the rent to own approach – it can mean one less difficult business decision.

Advice And Tips On Learning To Play The Snare Drum

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

Playing the snare drum and learning snare drum rudiments are probably the two most important parts of any beginning drummers regiment. Learning the drums requires time, patience, and coordination, but the snare drum is by far the prized drum out of the whole drum set for its sound. Because of this, many snare drums that are made today are decorated and are almost of much works of art, as they are drums.

When it comes to choosing the right snare drum for the style of music in which you are playing, there are several parts of the sound that you need to consider, and I wouldn’t spend too much time worrying about the look because the look of drums is usually customizable depending on who you get them from.

First off, the most important part of any snare drum is probably a close-tie between the snare strainer and the shell, as these two components form the main basis of your sound. The snare strainer is crucial because the resonation of the snares in your drum determines the amount of attack that the drum will project, as these are the part that snaps and crackles when you hit the drum. Until recently, many snare strainers were still made from maple. However, in the past couple of decades steel has become the norm, although you will still see maple, aluminum, and brass strainers as well.

The shell in your drum is one of the most important parts of any drum as well. It actually forms the second part of what you hear in a snare drum tone, so it is a perfect compliment to the strainer. The shell choice can give you more resonance, a sharper attack, or even change the frequencies that your snare drum produces depending on what type of shell you choose. Some of my favorite shells are made from copper and mahogany, however steel and maple are also the most prominent types of shells these days that you will find. Drummers prefer maple for its warmth of tone, and a rich midrange EQ, and they like steel when they need a lot of power and sound out of the drum. For these reasons, jazz drummers often prefer maple snare drums, while rockers and metalheads will be more prone to rock the steel.

Yamaha Snare Drums are probably my favorite type of snare drums in general, because they tend to be produced with the best hardware, which is another important consideration for when you are buying a snare drum. Because hardware does more than just hold the drum heads to the shell, it affects the sound in a big way. Your hardware needs to be dense and powerful if you are going to have a big sound, because it multiples the volume and attack of your drum tone. The reason I prefer yamaha for this is that their snare drum hardware has quite a bit of longevity to it, and it is a dense as you will find and it sounds awesome. The Maple Custom Absolute is probably the most popular Yamaha Snare Drum, and it is this way because of its lush but full sounding and loud tone.

My advice to beginning drummers is, if you want to learn to really get good at the drums, then you need to grab a couple of books of snare drum exercises and solos to get you started. And that means learning how to read music, or at least, snare drum notation. Among the best of these books are:

  • Stick Control: For The Modern Snare Drummer, by George Lawrence Stone
  • Portraits In Rhythm: 50 Studies For Snare Drum, by Anthony J. Cirone
  • Buddy Rich’s Modern Interpretation of Snare Drum Rudiments, by Henry Adler
  • 14 Modern Contest Solos For Snare Drum, by John S. Pratt

Finally, when you are learning drums, and especially the snare drum, you need to remember that while technique and exercises are extremely important, so is exploring your creativity. Take some time and explore your own ways of making buzz rolls, rim shots, and different sounds with the drums. This will benefit you in the long run, when you are called upon to play different styles of music than just your home genre. You will need to know something about a wide variety of musical styles if you want to become a great drummer, so have fun and explore what else is out there. You’ll probably find a lot that you like.
