Trendy Hairstyles Are NOT For Mature Women

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

A stylist in New York who specialized in creating trendy hairstyles for women, regularly highlighted her own gorgeous long hair. One day, her clients arrived at the salon to find she had cut her hair to a moderate shoulder-length, added darker highlights instead of blonde ones, and re-styled the front and top into a less bodacious look. When asked why she had changed to something more natural and classic, she explained that she’d recently turned 40 and that she wouldn’t make the mistake that many trendy stylists and mature women make of having hairdos that made them look like a 25 year old from behind but when they turned around were obviously much older. She said that she had decided a long time ago that she wouldn’t fall into the trap of being a mature woman with too trendy a hairstyle for her face after having witnessed an event that was embarrassing for a beautiful lady she encountered at a ski resort.

The woman had long blonde hair, well maintained and highlighted a youthful shade of ash blonde, beautifully feathered to add body and fullness to the front and back, as was the trend of the time. The woman was slender and fit, a ski instructor at the ledge, and from the back, it was easy to mistake her for someone in her early 20’s, however, she was in fact 53. In her face, although well cared for, she had the signs of mature skin, crows feet around the eyes, the effects of being exposed to sun, wind and cold from years of skiing, thin lips that had small lines where they had often been chapped over the years and things of that nature.

One day, a young man, no more than 22, sitting with a group of friends in the cocktail lounge, noticed her from behind as she walked across the room. It was obvious from the way he and his friends ogled and began talking and gesturing, that they were very attracted to her, so much so that when the young man went to speak with her, there was every indication it was to invite her to join them for a drink. However, when she turned and smiled, and he saw that she was in fact a much more mature woman than he had expected, he became uncomfortable, fumbling for an excuse and awkwardly leaving her at the bar to return to his group of immature friends.

The above trivial event isn’t repeated in order to say that a woman of 53 isn’t attractive or sexy enough to keep the physical interest of a 22 year old stud, rather the moral to the story is that when a man knowingly is attracted to a beautiful mature woman he goes about it with that knowledge and not expecting a young girl. It’s like biting into a sandwich you think is peanut butter and jelly only to find it’s actually ham and cheese. You like both but you’re shocked when you taste ham because you were expecting jelly.

So, returning to the New York stylist, she said she wanted to look her age, at least within the ballpark, and flaunt being a well put together mature woman that matched both in front and from behind. For that reason she would no longer choose the youthful trendy hairstyles that made her look younger from the back but didn’t match her facial features when seen from the front.

That is one reason why trendy hairstyles are not the best choice for mature women.
