Christmas Holidays in Berlin

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Every year more and more people spend their Christmas Holidays abroad. Not only it is refreshing and very different, but you can also find amazing deals at this time of year. Berlin (East Germany) has become a very popular and ideal destination in the last few years because of its culture and traditions.

Berlin is a very exciting city all year round, full of many different cultural events, museums and a fascinating history. Undoubtedly, it is also an excellent choice for those whishing to experience a typical Eastern European Christmas and at the same time enjoy all the different traditions. If you like experiencing new and exciting cultures, Berlin is most definitely a magnificent choice.

Celebrations start with the Adventszeit (pre-Christmas) from the 1st December up until the 24th. A wreath is made with pine leaves and four candles and every Sunday a candle is lit until Christmas Eve. Also, a calendar is specially made for the festive occasion; each day is crossed out as they pass (children can open little “windows” on this calendar which hold inside chocolates and other treats). It is a wonderful way to shorten the waiting time until the holidays.

In many places around Germany people still sing Christmas carols in front of the Christmas tree (also called Tannenbaum).

Christmas markets are very popular in most German towns. In Berlin we will be able to find plenty of different Christmas markets in which we can enjoy lots of different Christmas German treats made with lots of marzipan and cinnamon. One of the most beautiful markets is Gendermenplatz, which opens from 24th November until 31st December. There you can sample typical German sausages accompanied by Glühwein (mulled wine) as well as all sorts of candy, crafts, Christmas decorations, toys and other goods.

Another famous market is located on Unter der Linden (from 24th November to 31st December). Here you can enjoy bijouterie glass and traditional ceramic work.

Other places with great markets are Alexanderplatz in Kudamm and Scholss Charlottenburg.

So, why not spend a great Christmas abroad this year? Berlin will most definitely delight you with its charm and traditional festive culture.
